Sunday was the one day of rest for the slave - the only day not given to labor. But laws in most southern states kept them from worshiping secretly by themselves where their prayers, songs, sermons, and discussions could not be monitored. This secret communication comes together with other elements to play an important role in the development of one of the most known and sung spirituals today, "Let Us Break Bread Together on Our Knees."ĭuring slavery some African Americans worshiped openly among themselves and others worshiped in the churches of their owners. Much has been written about the coded language in the spirituals used to convey messages and information between slaves without their owners' knowledge.
